In May, as part of our Be Curious Weekend, we ran a one-day workshop for members aged 12+, introducing young writers to the exciting and evolving world of journalism. In a practical and fun workshop, participants thought like journalists, discovered different jobs in the journalistic world, analysed the news and worked on basic writing, reporting, interviewing and editing skills.

In the afternoon it was time to bring the Beaumanor Bugle to life!  In a trip into Beaumanor Hall itself, they encountered and interviewed Elizabeth Winton, an 83-year-old grandmother who had been through a dreadful night – hearing morse code knocking on the radiator in her hotel room warning Elizabeth and her husband to get out.  The group then rushed back to their workshop to research ghostly happenings at Beaumanor Hall in time to produce copy for that day’s Bugle!  “It was a great day, we learned lots about journalistic techniques – far more than I have at school!” said Francesca, aged 15.

The day was brilliantly led by Sharon Green, content editor and designer working for the Trinity Mirror Group and Sian Tower, a writer and Education Manager for Writing East Midlands.
