Ofsted Reporting of Provision for the Most Able Pupils: Comparison of Analyses of Ofsted Reports Published in 2018 and 2019

£0.00

Potential Plus UK carried out analyses of all reports published by Ofsted following inspections of schools in the  months of June 2018 and June 2019. This report gives information about both analyses and compares them to see whether there are changes over time in the reporting of provision for most able pupils. The findings of the analyses and comparison between them indicate that a consistently high percentage of schools (44%) do not have good enough provision for their most able pupils, leading to these pupils not making the progress that they should.

Description

Analysis was carried out on Ofsted reports from June 2018, which identified that 44.09% of organisations required change to their ‘more able’ provision. The vast majority of this change was a need for more challenge (66.67%) and/or more progress (27.73%). To ensure that this was not an anomaly the analysis was repeated for inspection reports from June 2019. It was a similar picture. The percentage of organisations requiring change to their ‘more able’ provision had not significantly improved. The 2019 analysis showed that 44.83% of organisations required change to their ‘more able’ provision: with the vast majority requiring more challenge (60.07%) and/or more progress (26.74%).

The analyses consider what changes are needed to be made in schools where provision is not good enough. They further consider whether there are variations between schools with different Ofsted ratings, different types of schools,
schools catering to different phases of education and in different regions.
