What is the High Learning Potential Assessment Plus?

The High Learning Potential Assessment Plus is a 4 hour in-person assessment with a qualified assessor, for children aged 5-17. It provides a holistic profile of your child, including areas of strength and weakness and aims to help parents to better understand and support their child with their educational, social and emotional needs. It includes comprehensive information regarding their cognitive abilities, potential and current achievement levels.

The High Learning Potential Assessment Plus uses:

Background information from parents and (optionally) the school, with norm-referenced tests that assess:

  • Cognitive ability or intelligence using a brief IQ test
  • Current academic achievement in reading, writing and mathematics
  • Working memory
  • Verbal processing speed
  • A dyslexia screener (based on key indicators from the tests above)
  • A sensory processing differences screener.

Who is the High Learning Potential Assessment Plus for?

This assessment is suitable for children aged 5 to 17 years who have completed at least one term in Reception or who are home-educated.

Benefits of the High Learning Potential Assessment Plus?

  • Provides detailed understanding of a child’s cognitive abilities and achievement levels
  • Identifies a unique profile of strengths and areas still developing
  • Parents receive brief verbal feedback shortly after the assessment
  • A detailed, comprehensive report with recommendations to nurture strengths and support weaknesses is provided within 3 weeks during term time, including advice and resources for:
    • Parenting for highly able children
    • Supporting the child’s socio-emotional and academic development at home
    • Next steps in reading, writing, and maths
  • A follow-up consultation for any questions.
  • Additional support available through the Information and Advice Service free for eligible members of Potential Plus UK or as pay-as-you-go calls
  • Optional reports to purchase including a School Advice Pack with detailed educational needs and support recommendations.

Why undertake the High Learning Potential Assessment Plus?

Whilst the High Learning Potential Assessment benefits all children, Potential Plus UK recommends an assessment in certain situations:

  • Rapid and sustained intellectual development, not in line with peers
  • Differences in performance or work between school and home
  • Significant strengths alongside areas needing substantial support
  • Behavioural issues linked to boredom or lack of stimulation
  • Specific concerns such as school refusal, reluctance to write, or difficulties with peer integration.

In addition to test scores, this assessment gathers background information from the child, parents and (optionally) the school to create a holistic and comprehensive profile of strengths, needs, and areas still developing.

How much does the High Learning Assessment of Potential Plus cost?

  • Family Plus Members: £750 including VAT
  • Family Essential, Associate Family Members or Non-members: £870 including VAT (pro rata upgrades from Family Essential to Family Plus memberships are available. Associate members and non-members are recommended to consider taking out Family Plus Membership)
  • Eligible Family Plus members who would struggle to meet the cost of an assessment can apply to the Scholarship Fund for assistance.

How long does the High Learning Potential Assessment Plus take?

The assessment typically takes about 4 hours (including breaks), although it can be shorter or longer depending on the child’s attention span

This assessment is available at our Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) or Brockworth (Gloucestershire) venues
