2017 saw the 50th<\/sup> birthday of Potential Plus UK and to celebrate we held a writing competition across our ezines, based \u2013 naturally \u2013 on the theme of \u201cFifty\u201d.\u00a0 It was a tough job choosing winners from such high quality entries, with poetry being a favoured form. Here are the winner, runner-up and highly commended entries from the PPUK ezine Fuse<\/strong> for ages 8-11.<\/p>\n

The Big 50 by Michael C. (aged 10)<\/h3>\n

Fifty is a number, the big five 0
\nHalf a century, that\u2019s old, whoa
\nPeople are in their 50\u2019s but say they\u2019re in their 20\u2019s
\nHow many people do that? I can tell you, plenty!<\/p>\n

If you score 50 in a rugby match, you\u2019re doing well
\nYou usually have 50 minutes for your lunch break, before they ring the bell
\nThe number 50 bus goes through Kings Heath
\nWhen you\u2019re 50, you start to have false teeth<\/p>\n

50 is a bank note, think of all that money
\n50 degrees would be unspeakably sunny
\nThe 0 in fifty is, around the castle, a moat
\nYou could easily sail there but first you\u2019ll need a boat<\/p>\n

50 percent in a test is half
\nBad enough to make you laugh
\nYou\u2019re not that great
\nIf you\u2019re 50 minutes late!!!<\/p>\n

50 in the charts is not a very good song
\nIf you don\u2019t like it, it\u2019ll last very long
\n50 years old is a grand old age
\nOld, but everyone has to go through that stage<\/p>\n

50 backwards is 05
\nYou\u2019d only just be alive!
\n\u201c50 miles in that direction\u201d
\n50 votes in an election<\/p>\n

50 years of potential plus
\nWow, that\u2019s lush
\nYou\u2019ll notice this poem is really long
\n\u2018Cause next year I\u2019ll be writing \u2018bout 51!<\/p>\n

The Wonders of 50 by Aliya S.O. (aged 8)<\/h3>\n

Fifty is known as a half century in cricket and life,
\nAnd in anniversaries the 50th one is gold,
\nIt is like cutting 100 into 2 with a knife,
\nFifty is the best number ever that one has told,
\nWith fifty you never ever have a conflict or strife,
\nThis number in human history can never get old.<\/p>\n

I have fifty favourite books,
\nEach one equally read,
\nI even have fifty different looks,
\nEach one with a different hat on my head,
\nSo many items get lost in crannies and nooks,
\nBy the time you find them, you will mostly knock out on your bed.<\/p>\n

50 in dog years is a little more than 7,
\nI even have two dogs namely Pepper and Droopy,
\nBut the number of cats I own is eleven,
\nMy favourite cartoon character is that dog Snoopy,
\nPut me with fifty dogs and I will be in a state of zen,
\nWhen I come home to my pets I say, \u201cWhoopie!\u201d<\/p>\n

Fifty has so many combinations to get to it,
\n25+25 is one followed by 40 plus ten,
\nMath is so exciting that one can\u2019t even sit,
\nI love solving math problems with my pen,
\nAlways keeping numbers specially 50 in my liking kit,
\nAs numbers are my friends when I am alone in a dark den.<\/p>\n

Giving in 50-50 % is the way to solve a fight,
\nWhen it comes to your loved ones, always share and care,
\nBeing kind is more important than showing your might,
\nSeeing others unhappy is something I can\u2019t bear,
\nEveryone should be happy and spread some light,
\nAlways going the 50-50 way is something I swear!<\/p>\n

When I think of 50 – Synesthesia by Finn A-H. (aged 8)<\/h3>\n

When I think of 50 I think of green, black and chocolate. It\u2019s because 5 is green, 0 is black and 50 is a chocolate number. Sometimes, when I\u2019m supposed to write A, I write A. Ooops! I mean 1. That\u2019s because 1 and A are red numbers and they both connect to Friday. I don\u2019t know why \u2013 they just do! It\u2019s the same with other numbers and colours and days\u2026 Spaghetti hoops are orange so they go to 3; fried potatoes go to Y and Sunday; lentil and bacon stew goes to T, V, Tuesday and Thursday. L is a gentle letter so it goes to Minuet in G by Beethoven, which is pink. G, brown and pink go to Penny Lane by the Beetles.<\/p>\n

Anyway, back to 50. I think the person who started the Green & Black\u2019s chocolate company must have done it when they were 50.<\/p>\n

Fifty by ‘Team Trouble’ Erin L. (age 9) and Niall L.(age 7)<\/h3>\n

What do you see, when we say \u2018fifty\u2019?
\nAll think differently, you see.<\/p>\n

Would you see a number line, shiny and short,
\nOr do you find an elderly, wrinkles taut?
\nOr will you see a candle of 5 and 0,
\nFlaming and fizzing, putting on a show?<\/p>\n

For we see magic, on potential plus,
\nOn its 50th<\/sup> Birthday,
\nSo please believe us.
\nAs this is a milestone, a mark in time,
\nAnd 50\u2019s a beauty of riddle and rhyme.<\/p>\n

The Crystal Hunt by Naima M.<\/h3>\n

Once upon a time a young, beautiful girl beautiful girl named Catherine was going to the library. She found a book which was brown and coated with fluff called 50 stories. She opened it and suddenly she whizzed into the book. Catherine walked along a steep hill and found a messy, blue-eyed, crazy girl saying,
\n\u201cThe queen is gone we need to find 50 crystals<\/em>\u201d
\nShe saw Catherine, \u201cYou must be Catherine , I\u2019m Izzy<\/em>\u201d said the girl.
\n\u201cFind 50 crystals? What do you mean?<\/em>\u201d blurted Catherine.
\n\u201c10 crystals are hidden in five places, when you have 50 they will form a light and guide the queen back, here are the clues<\/em>\u201d Izzy replied.<\/p>\n

PTOSATOES<\/strong><\/p>\n

Catherine muddled the letters \u201dpotsoet , pet, potatoes!<\/em> \u201c she said and headed to a garden centre to find 10 crystals. Beside the potatoes, she read the next clue.<\/p>\n

MIGHT, SIGHT, NIGHT<\/strong><\/p>\n

She tried to think of rhyming words\u00a0 “jight, right and knight”<\/em> she thought and rushed to the palace. Next to a knight she found 10 crystals. Catherine read the last clue,<\/p>\n

You will find the next 20 crystals in a shady place <\/strong>where plants surround you<\/strong><\/p>\n

She thought of a shady place with lots of plants, she realised it was the forest. She walked to the forest and found 20 crystals. She put them together and a golden light formed above them. It was the light that was guiding the queen home. Catherine\u2019s adventure was over, suddenly she whizzed back home.<\/p>\n

The Surprise Surprise by Dawn S. (aged 10)<\/h3>\n

\u201cDad! We know it\u2019s your birthday but please wake up<\/em>!\u201d
\nJonathan feebly opened his eyes. It took a few moments to realise why there were an enormous pile of presents by his bed\u2026of course. It was his 50th birthday.
\n\u201cLet\u2019s see \u2018em, then<\/em>,\u201d he said. He wanted this done with, he had a secret that could finally be revealed at four o\u2019clock\u2026<\/p>\n

Jonathan looked at his new watch. ‘Half past three’<\/em>, he thought. ‘Come on!’<\/em>
\n\u201cWhat\u2019s up?<\/em>\u201d asked his son, Harold. Jonathan chuckled. \u201cYou like thinking something\u2019s wrong, don\u2019t you!<\/em>\u201d
\n\u201cThey\u2019re not bothering you, are they?<\/em>\u201d his wife Michaela asked. \u201cIt being your birthday, and everything? Why don\u2019t you go upstairs? Do The Puzzle Book for Over 50\u2019s?<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

‘Yes, this is part of the plan<\/em>‘, thought Jonathan. ‘I\u2019ll play along<\/em>‘\u2026and he trooped upstairs, shrugging like he had no idea what this was about. He sat down on his bed. ‘Twenty to four. I have acted well<\/em>‘, he thought.<\/p>\n

At one minute to four, the doorbell rang.
\n\u201cJust Tesco<\/em>!\u201d called Michaela. \u201cThey\u2019re always on time, aren\u2019t they<\/em>!\u201d But she didn\u2019t answer to HAPPY BIRTHDAY! or the mumbling voice of a deliverer from Tesco. It was to \u201cIs Jonathan in<\/em>?\u201d If this was his surprise birthday party\u2026Jonathan bounded downstairs to see his best friend Samuel.
\n\u201c\u2019F yer not \u2018avin\u2019 a par\u2019y, d\u2019ja wanna come?<\/em>\u201d he asked. Shocked Jonathan agreed, and off they walked.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was a good job of making Dad think he had a party at four, wasn\u2019t it?<\/em>\u201d asked Beatrice.<\/p>\n
