Here are the winning and recognised entries in the 12-18 Age Group. The Penned in Poetry competition was well-received with many entries received from around the world in each age category. The entries were judged by a panel against ten different criteria, including assonance and alliteration, form and flow, rhyme and rhythm, and overall impact. Here is more information about the judging criteria<\/a> and what they mean.<\/p>\n

The panel was made up of highly acclaimed, award-winning professional poet, performer and educator Joshua Seigal<\/a>, author of the Opening Doors series and educationalist Bob Cox<\/a>, Potential Plus UK Young Reporter Fran Glover, and mother\/daughter team family members Martha and Caroline Hooton-Picard.<\/p>\n

The judges commented that the overall standard was very high, and some thoughtful and powerful work was produced. \u201cThese young poets have shown us all that there is a huge spirit of inventiveness, resilience and care out there. There is evidence of top-level potential for writing and crafting ideas in so many ways. Authentic ‘voices’ shone through in many poems. What a pleasure to see such a wide age range involved too. Creativity is alive and well in lockdown.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The Deafening Sounds by Naina Zilbermints (aged 18) <\/span><\/h3>\n

I hear the birds chirping on their branches
\nSun casting their short shadows on the grass.
\nNo murmur in the streets
\nFor they were silent, empty odd-
\nSight of none, voice of none.
\nI went outside today, hoping to feel
\nThe sun burn my face. The windows had paled its rays
\nSo I rub my hands clean<\/p>\n

The sky once grey with soot, now blue
\nGround once oil now grass
\nLife buzzes while all is still.
\nThrough the looking grass of the iron gates
\nI observe the empty street,
\nOne car then another, glide every once in a while
\nA masked man makes his way down the empty market
\nLarvate lady passes in the opposite direction
\nThe gulf between them growing.
\nSo I rub my hands clean<\/p>\n

The news channel turns to static,
\nNumbers, locations, the nameless
\nTwo thousand two hundred, four thousand and three
\nWuhan, Paris, London- down the street
\nYou wonder if it had been your mother or a face in the crowd
\nSo I rub my hands clean.<\/p>\n

The silence of the streets and your home is deafening
\nLife\u2019s voice has become mute.
\nI hear Americans protest the silence
\nExposed women and men and their kids
\nScream with mouths open wide
\nGuns blazing into the sky, cars honking
\nRoad blocking. While the ambulances stand still
\nRednecks fuelled by Sisyphean idleness-
\nProtest the ill.
\nSo I rub my hands clean.<\/p>\n

Time and reflection,
\nSelf-reflection and time.
\nI had seen enough of myself by now
\nI do not look like myself anymore, only-
\nAn animated shell of a person remains.
\nGrey skin, wild hair and death in the eyes.
\nSo I rub my hands clean one more time.<\/p>\n

A Kaleidoscope of Wishes by Olivia Beling (aged 12)<\/h3>\n

I wake up to another day
\nConfined in the walls of my home
\nBut today I have got a way
\nOf making my support be shown<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll paint a glorious rainbow
\nStick it up on the windowsill
\nTo make sure the NHS know
\nI\u2019ll send them my wishes, I will<\/p>\n

So, after I\u2019ve had my breakfast
\nI delve for some paints in the shed
\nThe rich colours; the most precious
\nPaint the thoughts that are in my head<\/p>\n

Scarlet red leaps over the page
\nAs it fades into clementine
\nSunshine yellow bursts from its cage
\nWeaving between a zesty lime<\/p>\n

Sky blue dances under the green
\nIntertwining with sapphire
\nLilac flows as a glossy sheen
\nAnd with it all my desires<\/p>\n

Desires for people in need
\nTo never, at all, feel alone
\nSo, I\u2019ll let my colours be freed
\nAnd all from my very own home<\/p>\n

(Don’t) Wish You Were Here by Kate Lucas (aged 17)<\/h3>\n

Life in a box too small for its corners
\nTime ticking on, going nowhere special
\nBest laid plans lie discarded and dormant
\nSpoiled like softness of spring\u2019s last petal<\/p>\n

Shoes wait unworn in the rack by the door
\nThe noise of untaken footsteps echoes
\nThroughout the hall, eyes stare at walls boring
\nHoles, tracing the path of the highs and the lows<\/p>\n

Unwished words for proper dreams, not these fake
\nSort, of maybes, and tomorrows, in time,
\nRoaming like a feral dog with nowhere to roam
\nAwake at strange hours, learning to mime<\/p>\n

The actions of the day, over and over
\nAnd over again until it is over<\/p>\n

Third Place<\/span><\/h2>\n

The judges said this poem reflected well the claustrophobia many must be feeling at the moment. They commented that the rhyming used was unique and that the poem was technically very good.<\/em><\/p>\n

Ghost by Rhea Dailey (aged 13)<\/h3>\n

A stranger stares back at me from the mirror\u2019s glass
\nIn reality, it\u2019s me, but as the seconds and days pass
\nLife turns into routine, a string of running code
\nThe unfamiliarity of my own abode
\nI feel numb like a ghost that tired of feeling so many emotions
\nScenic views mean nothing, my mind is better than any ocean
\nThe comfort that is sleep, my thoughts feel more real than words
\nIt protects me from despair, but I feel as free as a caged bird<\/p>\n

\nFrom the edge of the quay
\nLike the day to a perfect dream<\/p>\n

To others, you are there
\nYou are happy and free
\nYou have a life, without me
\nAnd a home in which to sleep<\/p>\n

But to me, you are lost
\nYou won\u2019t be coming back
\nBut I will still be there
\nA night for your dream

The colour of the flying weather has faded in the markets,
\nSilently guarded is the kingdom of silence.<\/p>\n

Panic death came to fruition in Fiza,
\nCrusade – Jihad is the battle to sit in the houses.<\/p>\n

Why will you come out on the road when you are safe in Home
\nSit in your own people, if you love your family.<\/p>\n

How long will one day India win the cry of Corona,
\nThe power of Navratri will fight, Ramjaan is coming.<\/p>\n
