The latest research is contradictory but seems to agree that time spent on screens should be balanced out by time being physically active, playing and socialising.<\/p>\n<p>We look at apps and best practice to encourage physical and mental health in children and young people.<\/p>\n<h3>\u00a0Screen Use Guidelines<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Time Limits<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Upper time limits are disputed by professionals, but broadly range from no use, to 3 hours, to using parental\/teacher discretion.<\/li>\n<li>Consider your child\u2019s age and circumstances alongside respected sources, such as:<\/li>\n<li><em>Gifted Students and Screen Time &#8211; every 20 minutes, look away from your screen for 20 seconds at something at least 20 feet away, (RCPCH).<\/li>\n<li>Get great ideas from <em>The Health Impacts of Screen Time: a fact sheet for parents<\/em> (RCPCH) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rcpch.ac.uk\/sites\/default\/files\/2018-12\/rcpch_screen_time_parent_fact_sheet_-_final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/www.rcpch.ac.uk\/sites\/default\/files\/2018-12\/rcpch_screen_time_parent_fact_sheet_-_final.pdf<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Use \u2018night settings\u2019 to decrease the amount of visible blue light emitted by the screen as bedtime approaches <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aop.org.uk\/our-voice\/policy\/position-statements\/2023\/01\/03\/visible-blue-light\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.aop.org.uk\/our-voice\/policy\/position-statements\/2023\/01\/03\/visible-blue-light<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>To aid sleep, turn off digital devices an hour before bedtime.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Safety First <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Always check apps in advance for age ratings and any purchase costs.<\/li>\n<li>Use a reputable source such as: the Google Play store (Android or Windows phones and tablets); Apple\u2019s App Store (iPhones and iPads); known retailers (e.g. Amazon); Microsoft Store (Windows 10); or directly from the game\/developer\u2019s website.<\/li>\n<li>Check privacy settings regularly to ensure: all gameplay, video creation, etc, is \u2018private\u2019 (isolated) not \u2018public\u2019; for example, a themed game, study course or collaborative project.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid \u2018fighting\u2019 games. According to studies, gifted players can be more sensitive to screen violence <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2016\/08\/01\/health\/gifted-children-violence\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2016\/08\/01\/health\/gifted-children-violence\/index.html<\/a>, so keep screen time beneficial: <em>Positive Screen Time for Children<\/em>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theschoolrun.com\/positive-screen-time\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/www.theschoolrun.com\/positive-screen-time<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Audio-only content allows vision breaks and opportunities for multi-tasking or physical activity while audio streaming.<\/li>\n<li>Welcome a \u2018new-tech\u2019 approach to reading. Extendable with an official Scratch Jr Book and 75 Coding Cards, simple coding blends into a programming language and the full \u2018<em>Scratch<\/em>\u2019 environment <a href=\"https:\/\/scratch.mit.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/scratch.mit.edu\/<\/a> for more experienced users keen to \u2018share\u2019 with a wider community.<\/p>\n<p><em>Scratch<\/em> enforces Community Guidelines <a href=\"https:\/\/scratch.mit.edu\/community_guidelines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/scratch.mit.edu\/community_guidelines<\/a>, uses a profanity filter and allows offline use.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Animal Jam<\/em><\/strong> from National Geographic (3+, recommended 4-12+)<\/p>\n<p>User names protect the identities of \u2018<em>A.J.<\/em>\u2019 gamers as they explore the lands and oceans of Jamaa <a href=\"http:\/\/www.animaljam.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">www.animaljam.com<\/a>. Going at their own speed, players build a home, make friends, trade goods and opt into fun missions. As they travel, they learn wildlife facts, earn gems that donate funds to real-life wildlife conservation and visit National Geographic\u2019s mini cinemas and museums.\u00a0 A genuinely friendly environment, as responsible adult, you oversee the <em>Animal Jam<\/em> account and set appropriate chat levels.<\/p>\n<h3>Other High Learning Potential App Options<\/h3>\n<p>In the Google Play Store or Apple App Store, search for terms such as \u2018educational\u2019 (and then select an age range), \u2018puzzles\u2019, \u2018word games\u2019 or \u2018brain teasers\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Tailor choices to your high potential learner\u2019s interests. For example, search for \u2018language\u2019, \u2018geography\u2019 or \u2018stars\u2019 to find suitable apps like <em>Duolingo<\/em>, <em>Babbel<\/em>, <em>Wordscapes<\/em>, <em>Words With Friends<\/em> (1 or 2 players), <em>StudyGe<\/em> or <em>Star Tracker<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Sleep Sounds<\/em>, <em>Doodle Master \u2013 Glow Art<\/em>, <em>Yoga for Kids<\/em> and <em>Rootd \u2013 Panic Attack and Anxiety Relief <\/em>are all examples of apps that help youngsters to think positively and cope in stressful times.<\/p>\n<p>Not forgetting the favourite of many children and young people: <em>Minecraft<\/em>, which is available in both \u2018Pocket\u2019 and \u2018Educational\u2019 Editions, (occasionally free to download).<\/p>\n<h3>Young People with High Learning Potential on Social Media<\/h3>\n<p>Social media has mixed reviews but can beneficially link high potential learners who are home educated or who have friendship groups outside of school. Monitor for unwelcome contacts and set time limits if usage becomes excessive.<\/p>\n<p>These days you can send and receive photos, videos, voice or video calls with most social media; features that once made <em>Facetime<\/em>, <em>Skype<\/em> and even <em>Facebook<\/em> \u2018essential\u2019 for tweens and teens.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Social Media Overviews for Other Young People with High Learning Potential<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hear the opinions of a Potential Plus UK teen member!<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201c<em>Snapchat<\/em><\/strong> (12+) is a messaging and photo-sharing platform. You have to choose who to accept to \u2018add\u2019, which makes it harder for strangers to randomly be in contact.<\/p>\n<p>Each \u2018Snap\u2019 disappears within a few seconds and can\u2019t be found again. Snapmaps can identify where you are, so I always switch on \u2018ghost mode\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>In-app mini-games are free but not very challenging \u2013 the best is Alphabear Hustle, a word game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong><em>Instagram<\/em><\/strong> (12+) is mainly for sharing photos and commenting on them. You can \u2018follow\u2019 friends or even famous authors, singers, etc. \u2013 Message and they might even message back! Since you simply look up someone\u2019s name to find them, I\u2019d choose a private account (for friends only) rather than a public one.<\/p>\n<p>If you love doing something like art, video-making or writing, you can show off your talents by posting lots of examples on your profile page.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong><em>WhatsApp<\/em><\/strong> (12+) is more like texting, but it\u2019s good for making family groups. I use it to share media with my Potential Plus UK friend who is home educated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong><em>TikTok<\/em><\/strong> (13+) is kind of an app <em>and<\/em> social media. It\u2019s for creating and posting your own short videos where you\u2019ve used music, comedy, drama or other <em>TikTok<\/em> \u2018sounds\u2019 made by other people \u2013 and then you lip-sync, dance, act, etc, to them. It can be hilarious! (Often inappropriate words slip through, so <em>TikTok<\/em> watch the settings!)<\/p>\n<p><em>TikTok<\/em> helps spark your public speaking and drama skills.
