[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]Following on from Emma’s blog about her mock trial as the Suffragette Mary Richardson at the Royal Courts of Justice<\/a>, Young Reporter Kerensa shares with us an article she wrote when she was 8 about following a Suffragette Walking trail in London. The trail was based on walking tours discovered online (The Suffragette issue of the Stylist magazine<\/a>, The\u00a0Londonist<\/a>\u00a0and the LSE and included a visit to see a Suffragette exhibit at the Museum of London<\/a>). Maybe you would like to try it the next time you are in London?<\/p>\n

\n

Now that Spring is here, you could go for a walk. We went to London to do a Suffragette-themed one, because I was learning about them at school.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1\/4″][vc_single_image image=”15128″ img_size=”medium”][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”3\/4″][vc_column_text]The Museum of London<\/strong> was our first stop. We looked at lots of Suffragette things such as badges, hunger strike medals, WSPU scarves and necklaces, teapots, teacups, newspapers, signs and toffee hammers.\u00a0 My favourite was Emmeline Pankhurst\u2019s hat feather and shoe, which came off while she was fighting the police.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1\/2″][vc_single_image image=”15131″ img_size=”large” add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center”][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/2″][vc_single_image image=”15132″ img_size=”large” add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]We went to the National Gallery <\/strong>to see a<\/em> painting.\u00a0 Only one!\u00a0 It is called the Rokeby Venus by Velasquez.\u00a0 It was attacked by Mary Richardson on 10th<\/sup> March 1914 because she was so angry at her leader, Emmeline Pankhurst, being put in prison the day before. Mary used a meat cleaver to slash it seven times, so earned the nickname \u2018Slasher Mary\u2019. Even though it has been repaired, you can just see where she slashed it, if you know where to look. Trafalgar Square<\/strong> is just in front of the National Gallery. \u00a0This is where Emmeline Pankhurst led her first women\u2019s suffrage demonstration on the 19th<\/sup> May 1906.<\/p>\n

[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1\/3″][vc_single_image image=”15124″ img_size=”large” add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center”][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/3″][vc_single_image image=”15129″ img_size=”large” add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center”][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/3″][vc_single_image image=”15130″ img_size=”large” add_caption=”yes”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Downing Street <\/strong>is where Daisy Solomon and Elspeth McLellan tried to post themselves to the Prime Minister, Herbert Asquith, in 1909. Sadly, they did not succeed because the Downing Street official wouldn\u2019t sign for the \u2018human letters\u2019.<\/p>\n

Elizabeth Tower<\/strong> is the tower that most people call \u2018Big Ben\u2019. Actually, Big Ben is the bell inside Elizabeth Tower.\u00a0 Also, there is a prison cell inside the tower. Emmeline Pankhurst was the last prisoner in that cell in 1902.<\/p>\n

Right beside Elizabeth Tower are the Houses of Parliament<\/strong> where suffragettes would chain themselves to the railings.\u00a0 In the Houses of Parliament is the Crypt of Westminster Hall<\/strong>, where Emily Wilding Davison hid overnight in June 1911.\u00a0 She wanted it to be her specified address for the Census.\u00a0 It was a bit ironic because she didn\u2019t have the vote!\u00a0 When you see her name, most people think of the Derby, because that led to her death. She had been trying to pin a Votes for Women scarf to the King\u2019s horse.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1\/2″][vc_single_image image=”15135″ img_size=”medium” add_caption=”yes”][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/2″][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

We just looked at Westminster Abbey <\/strong>from the outside.\u00a0 This is where a suffragette successfully set off a bomb in Edward the Confessor\u2019s Chapel, very close to the Coronation Chair. She ditched her bag, which contained the bomb as well as a feather boa and a guidebook.<\/p>\n

[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1\/4″][vc_single_image image=”15126″ img_size=”large” add_caption=”yes”][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/4″][vc_single_image image=”15127″ img_size=”large” add_caption=”yes”][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/4″][vc_single_image image=”15134″ img_size=”large” add_caption=”yes”][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/4″][vc_single_image image=”15133″ img_size=”large” add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]At the other end of the Houses of Parliament there are gardens named after another tower. The Victoria Tower Gardens<\/strong> has a statue of Emmeline Pankhurst. There is also a plaque for her daughter, Christabel. Where you might expect to see a plaque of Sylvia, her other daughter, is a plaque of the WSPU hunger strike medal instead.<\/p>\n

Then we went to see another statue, in Christchurch Gardens.<\/strong>\u00a0 This one was a memorial scroll to the men and women who tried to get votes for women.<\/p>\n

Our last stop, Caxton Hall<\/strong>, was where suffragists (normally peaceful) and suffragettes (often violent) had their meetings. \u00a0I really enjoyed my day.[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”15122″ img_size=”large” add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
