The characteristics relate to their intellectual strengths, academic difficulties, emotional and behavioural characteristics.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;50&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h3>Intellectual Strengths<\/h3>\n<p>Children with dual or multiple exceptionality are likely to have these characteristics which relate to their intellectual strengths:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>ability\/expertise in one or more specific areas<\/li>\n<li>an active imagination<\/li>\n<li>an extensive vocabulary<\/li>\n<li>exceptional comprehension<\/li>\n<li>high performance in tasks requiring abstract thinking and problem solving<\/li>\n<li>excellent visual or auditory memory, possibly not both<\/li>\n<li>creativity outside of school<\/li>\n<li>the ability to take part in broad-ranging discussions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/6&#8243;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_separator border_width=&#8221;2&#8243;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/6&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h3>Academic Difficulties<\/h3>\n<p>Conversely, children with dual or multiple exceptionality might have the following academic difficulties (depending on their special educational need or needs):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>poor handwriting<\/li>\n<li>poor spelling<\/li>\n<li>difficulty with phonics<\/li>\n<li>inability to do seemingly simple tasks. However, they often have the ability to do seemingly more complex ones<\/li>\n<li>success in <em>either<\/em> mathematics or language subjects, but challenges in the other<\/li>\n<li>poor performance under pressure<\/li>\n<li>difficulties in completing tasks with a sequence of steps discussions<\/li>\n<li>Inattentive at times<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/6&#8243;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_separator border_width=&#8221;2&#8243;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/6&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h3>Emotional and Behavioural Characteristics<\/h3>\n<p>Managing two (or more) issues means that children with dual or multiple exceptionality often develop emotional characteristics which may then result in certain behavioural characteristics.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text]<strong>Emotional Characteristics<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>minor failures that create feelings of major inadequacy<\/li>\n<li>unrealistically high or low self-expectations<\/li>\n<li>feelings of academic ineptitude<\/li>\n<li>confusion about abilities<\/li>\n<li>strong fear of failure<\/li>\n<li>sensitivity to criticism<\/li>\n<li>experiences of intense frustration<\/li>\n<li>low self-esteem<\/li>\n<li>feelings of being different from others<\/li>\n<li>poor social skills.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text]<strong>Behavioural Characteristics<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>disruptive in class<\/li>\n<li>often off-task<\/li>\n<li>disorganised<\/li>\n<li>unmotivated<\/li>\n<li>impulsive<\/li>\n<li>creative when making excuses to avoid tasks they find difficult<\/li>\n<li>can be intensely frustrated at times.
